2010 SCHOLARSHIPS

ALL scholarships need to be sent to the Unit President for the first stage of judging.

Scholarship Deadline Application
National President's Scholarship

The National President's scholarships are awarded to children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during the eligibility dates for The American Legion. One $2,500 scholarship, one $2,000 scholarship, and one $1,500 in scholarship money will be awarded in each division. Fifteen outstanding students will be awarded a total of $30,000 to further their higher education. The applicant must complete 50 hours of community service during his/her high school years to be eligible for one of these scholarship

 All are gift scholarships and are not loans.  Candidates for this award shall be direct descendants, step-children or step-grandchildren of U.S. wartime veterans who served during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion.

Spirit of Youth Scholarship will be awarded to candidates who have been Junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary; said member to have held Junior membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three years and must hold a membership card for the current (2010) year. Applicant must continue her membership in the American Legion Auxiliary during the four-year-scholarship period.  Five (5) four-year scholarships will be awarded for the year 2008-2009. One four-year scholarship will be awarded in each Division of the American Legion Auxiliary in the amount of $1,000 per year. All are gift scholarships and are not loans. Non-Traditional Student Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who is a member of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion and shall have paid dues for the two preceding years and for the calendar year in which application is made.  Applicant must be: a) A non-traditional student returning to the classroom after some period of time in which his/her formal education was interrupted; or b) A non-traditional student who is just beginning his/her education at a later point in life March 1, 2010 Click here for application (National website)

The Averyl Elaine Keriakedes Memorial Scholarship will be awarded, preferably, to a female enrolled at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln who plans to teach middle school or junior high school social studies.

The Graduate Scholarship of $200 will be awarded to a qualified applicant who is interested in teaching special education students.  Applicant must be veteran connected and hold a Bachelor’s degree.

The Practical Nursing Scholarship is a gift which must be used at the next session of a school of practical nursing.  This scholarship will not exceed $300.  Applicant must be veteran connected and a resident of Nebraska at least three (3) years immediately prior to application date.

Ruby Lorraine Paul Fund Scholarships will be awarded to a daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, great-granddaughter or great-grandson of an American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary member who has held Nebraska membership for two years or an American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion member who has held Nebraska membership for two years.  Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited college or university for the current year and be a Nebraska resident for the previous three (3) years.  Scholarships exclude applicants enrolled in a school of nursing.  Applicant must be a high school senior or a graduate of an accredited high school and have maintained a “B” or better average the last two (2) semesters of high school.

The Roberta Marie Stretch Memorial Scholarship of $400 will be awarded to a qualified applicant enrolled or accepted into an undergraduate or graduate (masters only) program at a four year college or university.  Applicant must be veteran connected and a resident of Nebraska.  Preference will be given to former Nebraska Girls State Citizens.

Student Aid Grant or Vocational Technical Scholarship - applicant must be a resident of Nebraska and must be a veteran or veteran connected.  No individual grant shall exceed $300.  Scholarships will be payable in two halves.  Each recipient is required to send one letter per quarter, with quarter grades, to American Legion Auxiliary Department Headquarters, PO Box 5227, Lincoln, NE  68505-0227.  In case a recipient leaves school, the Department Secretary must be notified immediately.
